Meatyard: Mint Condition
The crowd that gathered at the weekend for Esher Lawn Tennis Club’s
annual finals were treated to entertaining and extremely high quality
tennis.
There was excellent news for Julian Tutty (pictured bottom right) in the
Men’s Singles Plate, when he delighted his growing legion of supporters with a
rousing performance in which he dominated with some huge forehands and
unstoppable serves. With a growing confidence in his ability to trade
groundstrokes and some marvellous service returns, Tutty took the match 6-4,
6-4.
Another highlight of the day came in the Men’s Doubles Plate final. The crowd
was treated to a fabulous performance from Andrew Meatyard and Harry McCulloch
who played Graham Morris and Rick Stanley. Meatyard, who is no stranger to
tournament finals, was the perfect partner for McCulloch. The two have struck an
instant understanding on court and had no trouble rolling over their opponents,
6-2, 6-2.
All in all, it was another great day for Meatyard, who is in the shape of his
life thanks to a punishing new training regime which will no doubt pay dividends
as his season continues.
Meanwhile in the Ladies’ Singles, defending champion Rachel Woods beat Neesha
Cooray 6-2, 6-3. This was 15-year-old Cooray’s first appearance in a Ladies
Singles final but not her first in the Ladies’ Doubles. Last year she teamed up
with her mum, Cadzy, and won. They made it to the final this year too, but were
beaten in three sets by Woods and her partner Sarah Crowther. The final score
3-6, 7-5, 7-5.
Woods and Cadzy met up again in the Mixed Doubles final. Woods, partnering
with Chris Lloyd, beat Cadzy, who was partnering with Paul Fielding. The final
score 7-6, 6-4.
Lloyd was not so lucky in the Men’s Singles final. For seven years on the
trot, he faced Clinton Lamprecht who beat him 7-6, 6-2.
The Men’s Doubles saw Richard Crowther and Rob McCulloch beat Geoff
Langham and Ashok Mittal 7-5, 6-4. In the mixed doubles plate Geraldine
Fitzgerald and Graham Woods beat Nathalie Pengilly and Andrew Morrison 6-2
6-3.
