Going for Gold: Claire Wright (third from left) and the Marist athletes
Claire Wright, 28, has recently been selected to represent Team GB in
Individual Trampoline at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Claire attended the Marist Schools in Sunninghill and lives in
Berkshire. She already holds an astounding 51 World and European medals
and trophies, in addition to a FIG (Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique)
pin, and is thrilled to be going to Beijing.
She says: “I couldn’t be happier at the thought of representing the UK in
Beijing. This is my first Olympics. I'm going for the wonderful experience
of the Games and I will be aiming to complete my routines to the best of my
abilities.”
Claire is an inspiration for current sporting heroines at the Marist who are
hoping to secure places in Team GB for 2012. Like Claire, several students
hold impressive records of sporting achievements gained while still at school,
including:
· Rose Reynolds (17): National League Hurdling champion (Under 20
team). Rose is also the Sixth Form sports scholar at the Marist.
· Milli Parkin (16): already a member of the GB sailing squad and competing
in the World 420 Sailing Championships in Athens during July. Milli is
also a Marist sports scholar.
· Emily Gale (17) and Maddie Gale (16): members of the GB aerobic gymnastic
squad who both compete at international level. Maddie is also the Year 11
Marist academic scholar. Both girls were competitors in the French Open
aerobic gymnastics championship last week. Emily scored 19.1 in the Grand
Prix, the highest ever score of a GB female aerobic gymnast in an international
event. She finished the competition overall in 7th place.
· Sophia Candappa (15): a member of the England Under 17 Netball squad and
has recently been selected for the England Under 21 Netball squad too.
· Thea Cartwright (15): member of British champion gymnastic team ‘TeamGym’
· Lucy Campbell (12): current Berkshire gymnastics champion and member of
Phoenix Gym (Windsor).
