Marist School drama production raises £600 for Haiti

The Marist School's annual drama production was unique this year as every girl in year 9 took part

Over 90 pupils from Years 7, 8 and 9 at the Marist Senior School, Sunninghill, took part in this year’s annual School production, and the resulting show on two nights with two different casts was one of outstanding achievement for pupils with glowing praise from the audience.

The idea of ‘The 2010 Show’ grew from a desire from Mrs Jane Harris, Head of Drama, to include an ENTIRE year group, giving every pupil “a moment of fame”. This meant that the preparation became part of their drama syllabus. Many students worked independently on their pieces, devising dance routines, preparing songs and developing their characters.

Although the drama teachers Miss Juliet May and Mrs Jane Harris took responsibility for the “overall direction” pupils must be thoroughly congratulated on using their considerable creativity to support our ideas. It was particularly thrilling to see Fran Simcox, Year 10, undertake to write and direct her own show with Year 7, while our drama captains Megan Palfreyman and Emma Hall in Year 13 devised and directed a dance show with Year 8 students. Talented artists from class 7A painted the set, while Steph Chbat in Year 9 designed the programme and Bryony Short in Year 11 stage managed the whole show.

“It was incredibly satisfying to see so many pupils engaged with different responsibilities come together to create two evenings of sheer entertainment,” comments Mrs Harris.

Best of all the school raised £600 for the Haiti appeal through raffle and ticket sales. Students and staff at the school are very grateful to everyone who worked so hard both on and off stage to make this show a huge success.
