Prince Edward: Unveiling the plaque
The Earl of Wessex Prince Edward has officially opened the new Art and
Engineering building at Brooklands College.
The building took 18 months to build and approximately three years to plan,
at a cost £7.6million.
Prince Edward praised and thanked all those who contributed to the
project and said it was “a flavour of things to come” for the college,
The new three-storey facility provides the Art and Engineering departments
with more workshops and facilities including a rolling road.
Prince Edward said this will help the college to produce “the most employable
people in the South East”.
The Prince was welcomed to the college by the principal Colin Staff, Chair of
Governors, Margaret Hicks and the Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, Mrs Sarah Goad
JP.
He began his visit by touring the engineering facilities on offer to the
students with the Head of Engineering, Dave McLoughlin.
He then went on to meet Faculty Heads Jon Samson and Christine Rickets, who
took him on a tour of the first and second floors, where the Art and Design
department have moved from out dated facilities to brand new studios and
classrooms, including a photography dark room and a fully equipped Apple Mac
suite.
Following the tour, Prince Edward joined the Governors of the college,
representatives of the LSC, the Mayors of Elmbridge, Runnymede and Spelthorne
and invited guests for refreshments in the atrium before speeches were made by
the Chair of Governors, Mrs Margaret Hicks and College Principal Colin Staff.
The Prince thanked the college for his invitation and gave the students his
warm wishes for success with their future careers.
He was then invited to unveil the plaque, to mark the official opening of the
new Art and Engineering building.
