in full swing, water is in short supply and the garden is gasping

Focus your watering on key areas.

Desert Island Paradise If I had to live on a
desert island, I’d want it to be one with all the good things from
a perfect English summer’s day. Glorious sunshine, a gentle
breeze, tea and cake and summer flowers. And if I had to
choose just one flower to take with me to my island idyll, it would
have to be the rose.

Roses are such versatile garden plants. From ground cover
roses to climbers the height of a house, you can find one for
almost any situation. They add height to mixed borders
without the need for staking and the taller varieties are elegantly
shaped bushes. The flowers are in soft colors, which
harmonise well with most perennial plants. The large, solid
shape of the flowers also contrasts well with the airier, smaller
shapes of many perennials like nepeta and geraniums. Roses
also work extremely well with grasses. The tall pinkish
spears of Calamagrostis Karl Foerster are shooting up next to the
salmon blooms of Rose ‘Albertine’ in my front garden, and clouds of
limey Stipa tenuissima are floating around pink ‘Cottage
Rose’. Lovely, almost like I planned it! They also make
good cut flowers, so it’s worth adding a few bushes for use in the
house, and you can choose varieties without thorns, which helps
with picking them. Other practical uses include creating a
prickly hedge or covering up an ugly shed.

Some roses do well in pots, so you can put them on the patio and
surround yourself with fragrance. Plant in a 50:50 mix of
loam based and loam free compost and feed and water
regularly. Choose a ployantha or patio variety, or one of the
David Austen English roses, if you want repeat flowering and old
fashioned looking, highly scented flowers. Rose ‘Gertrude
Jekyll’, a voluptuous deep pink madam, is good in a pot and was
voted the nation’s favourite rose some years ago.

Roses are often shunned by some people, fearful of plants with
poor disease resistance. However, many of the new roses on the
market have been bred to toss their pretty heads and throw off
blackspot and mildew with ease. The old Rugosa roses are also
very disease resistant and mine thrive on neglect. The flowers are
big, blowsy and scented and you usually get hips in the
autumn.

Another reason why roses are not chosen is a lack of knowledge
of seemingly complicated pruning regimes. It’s true that you
do not prune all roses in the same way, so you have to have an idea
of the types that you have, but you only prune once a year, and
it’s not much effort for all those delicious flowers.
Besides, they won’t die if you get it a bit wrong.

The Savill garden in Windsor Great Park has just opened their
new rose garden, so it’s just the place to go for some inspiration
and tea and cake (see front page story in this issue).

Talking of which, you can make jam out of rose petals, which
could be useful on a desert island. Just the thing for the
afternoon scones. I hope Man Friday has got a
teapot!

users, so clearly it’s no longer just tech savvy
youths that are getting comfortable with the idea of sharing
details of their private lives online. The way that we communicate
has changed at breakneck speed over the last few years as a result
of new technology, but is this communication revolution actually
making our lives better?

Thursday didn’t start well. I was awoken by the sound of a
ringing iPhone, which was bad. Bad. Bad. Bad. Putting on my most
alert sounding ‘I’ve been up for hours’ voice, I sheepishly
answered the call whilst hurrying my way to the bathroom for a
shower. As the relief of discovering it was a colleague and not a
prospective client that had woken me up began to wash over me, it
felt fitting to start running the shower. But time was not on my
side and I was still in a state of undress when I should have been
well on my way out the door, so panicking like a cat in a room full
of rocking chairs I jumped into the shower whilst simultaneously
ending the call and placing my iPhone (somewhat precariously) on
the windowsill. I was now on my way. After such an appalling start
to the day, I was making up good time as I showered away the
excesses of the night before.

But things were about to get worse again. Whilst covered in
lemon and lime flavoured shower gel I heard the sound of my ringing
phone once again, vibrating its way around the windowsill. And off
the windowsill, off the edge of the basin and into the toilet.
Perfect…

Conscious that time was of the essence and caring little for the
essence of lime that was still in a rich lather all over my haggard
body, I slipped and slid my way across the bathroom floor towards
the toilet and with no time whatsoever to think about the
unpleasantness of the situation in front of me, I plunged my hand
into the toilet bowl to retrieve the well soaked iPhone.
Searching franticly for a towel, some self-respect and some
dignity, I desperately tried to dry the sodden iPhone forlornly
hoping that serious and expensive damage had not occurred. But it
had. As brilliant as they are, water resistance is sadly not one of
the iPhone’s myriad of mind-boggling features.

The upshot of this little episode was that I now needed a dry,
working phone. Having succumbed to the awful TV adverts for those
companies that buy old mobile phones, I’d previously packaged all
mine up and sent them off to Africa in exchange for a cheque and a
warm feeling inside. So I made my way down to my local mobile phone
shop where, against all my gadget-loving tendencies, I demanded
that they sell me the cheapest, nastiest phone in the shop. So they
did. And it was 99p. No onerous contract to sign, no terms to agree
to. I just paid the cash and walked out feeling rather like I’d
robbed them, whilst at the same time feeling delighted with my
first piece of good fortune of the day.

I’d expected to be able to buy a cheap phone to get me out of my
predicament. But I wasn’t expecting was being able to pick up a
mobile phone for less than the cost of a bottle of mineral water.
Or a litre of petrol. Or a cheese sandwich. Or a Sunday paper.

This little experience made me think about how inexpensive and
accessible technology has become in the last few years. Today, you
can get a mobile phone for 99p, a PC for £99, a digital radio for
£40, a 42” Plasma TV for £400 and broadband for £5 a month, with a
free router!

When Steve Jobs recently held aloft his ‘magical and
revolutionary’ iPad on stage in California, I’d kind of expected
him to say that this prop from a Star Trek film was going to cost
£1,000 or more. But it wasn’t even £500. No… it was £429.

I have an iPad *gasp* and whilst I’m still not totally sure what
I’m going to use it for on a regular basis other than idly browsing
the web whilst watching TV, I can’t deny that it’s a beautiful
piece of technology at an astounding price. The device has
potential for all manner of wonderful things and I expect that
Steve Jobs may well be right (he’s had a tendency to be right over
the past few years) with his grand predictions for the future of
the iPad. I have a desktop PC and a laptop PC and for me whilst the
iPad will never replace these devices there is another, very large
group of people whom I believe will buy it in their millions.
People like my girlfriend. My girlfriend is someone who is
completely apathetic about technology, someone who, much to my
bewilderment manages to run a sizeable business with all the
technology that a 10-year-old Nokia phone has to offer, and nothing
more. But even she said the other day ‘I think I’m going to get one
of these’ whilst idly messing around with my iPad. It does
everything she wants – web, email, Facebook and perhaps the odd
game of electronic Scrabble. Steve Jobs made MP3 players accessible
to the masses with the iPod, I think he may well have made the web
enabled computer accessible to the masses with the iPad.

The iPad will evolve and no doubt there will be an even slimmer,
shiner version that I will thoughtlessly, almost robotically buy
around this time next year, but its range of potential applications
is quite bewildering. One application I’ve found particularly
exciting for my business is its use as a method for controlling
electronic systems within the home (lighting, heating, music, TV,
security, CCTV, etc). I’ve been using it for in my showroom with
great success recently, it just works really well, if not better
than the proprietary touch panel devices which we were selling that
were in the order of 10 times the price of the iPad only a couple
of months ago.

Right across the electronics spectrum, the amazing value that
new technology is bringing us is palpable. Certainly in my business
things have moved on in a massive way over the last couple of
years. A few years ago Home Cinema systems were generally ugly,
complex to use and quite often hideously expensive. Today you can
buy a Home Cinema system that is beautiful to look at, simple to
use and great value, with astounding picture and sound quality that
rivals that of a real cinema, if not betters it. You can buy,
today, Internet connected music systems that let you listen to
whatever music takes your fancy, anywhere in the home at the touch
of a button. Security cameras that can be viewed on an iPhone
anywhere in the world. High Definition TVs as thin as a slice of
toast that are astoundingly cheap to buy. Baths that can be run by
sending a text message are available off the shelf. I almost feel
like I’ve been caught in a cartoon time warp and that I actually am
George Jetson from The Jetsons. All I need now is George’s 9 hour a
week ‘full time’ job…

Managers at Chessington’s SEA LIFE have taken steps to cover up
a topless mermaid after it was flagged that the buxom lady might be
in contrast to the attraction’s family credentials.

Concerned that visitors may find the mermaid, which is submerged
in the aquariums ocean tank, to be more impressive than the
majestic blacktip reef sharks that patrol the pool, bosses swapped
fish for fashion to find an appropriate bikini top for the
affectionately named Sally (after Salacia, Neptune’s queen in Greek
mythology), choosing one from Kelly Brooks’ latest swimwear
range.

Justine Locker, Zoo Experience Manager, said, “To be honest, we
hadn’t noticed quite how buxom Sally was until we clocked young
boys, and not so young boys, giggling and pointing at her in the
walkthrough ocean tunnel. Since then, none of us can avoid what is
starring us straight in the face, so it’s time for a cover-up.
Afterall, it’s summer, the perfect time to be sporting a designer
bikini!”

with the boys from Westlife. Attracting crowds of over 40,000 over

Brough Scott, Project Ambassador for Horses for Heroes

The sun shone for the equestrian world as Horses for Heroes took
place at Ascot Racecourse and Windsor Great Park at the
weekend.

With money still being collected by all 600 participants who
took part in the eight mile ride, organisers believe the final
money raised for service charity Help for Heroes may reach
£300,000.

Mark Elliot, Chief of Staff for Help for Heroes attended
Saturday’s event and was amazed with what he saw. "It’s been
absolutely brilliant," he said. "It’s extremely humbling to see the
effort that everyone has made to get here and be a part of this
historical ride. I’ve spoken to people who have come from all over
the country to do their bit and each one of them has had a smile on
their faces saying it’s the best sponsored ride they’ve ever taken
part in. Something very special has happened here today – it’s been
a special ride, a special route and a special place."

The Ascot team kicked off proceedings with a group of Riders
from the racecourse departing at 7:30am in the first group,
including Chief Executive Charles Barnett, Lt Guy Disney who
lost a leg in Helmand, and Help For Heroes Project
Ambassador Brough Scott.

Brough, who rode former Aintree Foxhunters winner Scots
Grey, said: "I’m unbelievably thrilled with today. The concept
of the ride, having the start and finish at Ascot enabling people
to gallop past the largest grandstand in the world at the end has
really worked and given riders a great experience. Holding a
charity event which people have actually enjoyed has really helped
with fundraising and it’s quite clear how much fun everyone has had
today."

Chelsea Flower Show

The RHS Chelsea flower show is the highlight of the
horticultural calendar. It showcases new plants, products and
garden design talent and sets the fashion for the garden for the
year ahead. So what was hot at Chelsea this year and how can you
bring the catwalk to your own courtyard?

For the last few years, the Chelsea colour palette has been
somewhat predictable. Purple was the colour to have in the garden,
usually in the form of the big globe heads of alliums. Last year,
green and white was a popular choice, used to create calm, restful
gardens, in which to escape the world. This year, however, things
have warmed up. Maybe in anticipation of the Barbeque Summer which
is forecast (and I am still waiting - burger in hand!), colours
were hot, hot, hot! Dramatic reds, warm oranges and clear yellows
appeared in many of the gardens, including the Best in Show, The
Daily Telegraph Garden. There were tall, lemony verbascums which
flower for a long time and add great structure and height to a
planting scheme. There were a lot of geums, a popular cottage
garden favourite, now bred to include plants in orange tones, as
well as the more usual red and yellow. Also lots of poppies, which
are gorgeous when they are in flower, but, it must be said, are
somewhat short lived, and look a mess after the flowers have
finished. Plant them in the middle of other plants, which will
disguise the dying debris. The same must be said of irises, which
were also everywhere in lots of coppery tones. Beautiful when in
flower; plain, often tatty leaves the rest of the year.

Artificial grass made its first appearance at Chelsea this year,
albeit covering a ceiling and walls, rather than the ground.
Despite its reputation as something of a joke item amongst real
gardeners, it is gaining in popularity. It is easy to lay on a sand
base, and, of course, doesn’t need watering, mowing or feeding. Top
of the range products are remarkably realistic; if you want to see
a ‘lawn’ that has been in place for a while, visit the RHS garden
at Wisley. One of the small display gardens has an artificial lawn,
which looks real from a distance and not bad close up, bearing in
mind it has been trampled by more feet than you are ever going to
get in your own garden.

Alpines were on show in many of the gardens, bringing this
somewhat specialist choice of plant more into the mainstream.
Sempervivums were planted in bricks, colanders and paving, as
specimens or mixed into a colourful mat. These small, almost cactus
like plants are easy to look after, needing little watering or
maintenance. I’m going to try putting my collection into a hanging
basket this year and see how they do. It will make a change from
lobelia!

Whether you choose a whole new 2010 Chelsea style for your
garden, or just one of the many new plants introduced this year,
you too can be an on trend Follower of Fashion!

of new technology, but is this communication revolution actually
making our lives better?

These days the idea of buying a CD seems so ‘last century’.
In 2010 the world of music is almost entirely digitised, the iPod
is almost as commonplace as the television and the idea of making a
mix tape is now so outmoded that only people over the age of 30
would even know what a mix tape was.

The digital music revolution has changed almost every aspect of
music distribution and has led to a massive shift in people’s
expectations of the availability and price of music. Being exactly
30 as I am, I can just about remember making mix tapes on a weekly
basis, religiously recording the Top 40 every Sunday afternoon so
that I could spend the rest of the evening crafting my ninety
minute vision of chart music gold. I’d listen continuously to my
labour of love on my auto-reversing Walkman for the rest of the
week whilst walking to school, delivering papers or riding my
mountain bike to my Saturday job in the local hi-fi shop. Every now
and again my Top 40 Mix Tape would throw up a single that was so
earth shatteringly good (like I Want To Sex You Up by Color
Me Badd, or Hangin’ Tough by New Kids On The Block, for
example) that I would be compelled to go and part with a week’s
wages to buy the album. Going into Our Price having saved up all
week to buy whatever CD was in vogue at the time and then racing
home on my mountain bike to play my amazing new purchase on my
Amstrad midi system was by far the most hotly anticipated and
enjoyable part of my week.

But that was quite a while ago and although I look back at those
days with a great deal of warm fuzziness, I can’t help but prefer
the way I access and listen to music today. If I hear a new song I
like today, I just play it through my Sonos digital music system.
It’s now the music that is the experience, not the anticipation of
getting it. I just type what I want to hear into my iPhone and it
plays, right away, wirelessly, in every room of my house and even
in my garden.

To reminisce once again back to my younger years, I remember how
on a Sunday afternoon my Dad would enjoy doing a spot of gardening
while listening to the driving beats and soulful ballads of Phil
Collins’ No Jacket Required. The only problem was that
because we only had one hi-fi in the lounge, Dad would turn Phil up
loud enough to hear him in the garden and the neighbours would end
up listening to Phil too. ‘Surely that’s not a bad thing’ I can
almost hear you say, but believe it or not, not everyone likes Phil
Collins. If only we’d had a Sonos Wireless Whole House Digital
Music System back when I was growing up, perhaps our neighbours
wouldn’t have moved away and my parents would still be
together?

Whatever might have been, I can’t explain how damn good this
system is without using a lot more swear words. I’ll just say that
if you like music then you’ll love the Sonos music system, if that
doesn’t sound too much of a cliché for you. In a nutshell you can
listen to all of the music you have on your iPod anywhere in the
house. But there’s more, oh, so much more. You can listen to
thousands of internet radio stations of every conceivable genre and
from all around the world. You can have your own personalised radio
station that plays music all day long that you, and just you,
really like by using the amazing last.fm service through the Sonos
system. It’s like having your own personal DJ. And, perhaps best of
all, you can listen to virtually any song in the whole wide world,
on demand and for only £5 per month using the Napster music service
through the Sonos system. Access to over 9,000,000 songs for just
£5 a month?! Yes folks, it’s true...

You can even play different music in different rooms, group
rooms together to play the same thing or just play the same thing
in every single room of the house if you so choose. It’s totally
flexible, really reliable and blindingly simple to use.

And best of all, you can have it installed without having to rip
your house apart as it’s totally wireless. Yes, ‘piped music’ used
to be the preserve of the rich and famous but now it’s as
affordable as double glazing. But a whole lot more fun…

The Queen opens new garden in the park

The Queen with Harvey Stephens, Head of The Savill Garden

Her Majesty The Queen has opened the new Rose Garden at The
Savill Garden, Windsor Great Park, and enjoyed a tour of this
exciting contemporary Garden with the Chairman and Chief Executive
of The Crown Estate.

Commenting on the new Rose Garden, Philip Everett, Deputy
Ranger, Windsor Great Park, said: "It was a pleasure to be able to
present this innovative Garden to Her Majesty The Queen. We have
moved away from the traditional presentation of roses and created a
new way to experience the perfume and colour of these splendid
flowers. It was fitting that the first bloom in the Garden was that
of Rosa - The Queen Mother."

The Crown Estate commissioned leading garden designers Wilson
McWilliam Associates to create the Garden. From an initial concept
and outline design by Andrew Wilson, he and Gavin McWilliam
developed the scheme to include the specification of materials and
construction details.

Visitors will experience the intensity of perfume and colour as
they enter the Garden and their senses will continue to be
stimulated at every turn with different scents, colour combinations
and views. The walkway in the centre of the design appears to
‘float’ above the Rose Garden, giving stunning views within the
Garden and further out into other areas of The Savill Garden. As
the deep aroma of the roses naturally rises, visitors will also be
able to enjoy the perfume at its best from the walkway.

Mark Flanagan, The Keeper of the Gardens, says: "The new Rose
Garden leaves behind traditional elements and the formality
associated with conventional designs and leads us into a new way of
displaying roses to create a fresh and stimulating visitor
experience. The Savill Garden has a tradition of exploring new ways
of presenting plants and showcasing new varieties and we are
continuing with this progressive approach with a design that looks
to the future."

The Rose Garden’s curves and interlocking crescents will create
a journey towards the centre of the Garden. This is emphasised by
the way in which the 2,500 roses have been planted within a palette
of colours radiating out from an intense centre of deep plum purple
through soft pinks fading to white and subtle apricots to tangerine
orange where the Garden meets the vibrant herbaceous borders.
Repeat flowering roses have been used which means that the Garden
will look splendid from mid-June through to September.

Mark Flanagan adds: "This has been an exciting project and we
are delighted with the way in which the Garden is now presented.
After enjoying the Rose Garden, visitors will be able to stroll
around the adjacent Golden Jubilee Garden, Dry Garden and the
herbaceous borders, all of which provide complementary, though very
individual, plantings which will look stunning throughout the
summer."

Gully cover thefts draining resources

Here's a bit of information to impress your friends with in
the pub this evening. It costs £55 to fill a
pothole.

That's the figure revealed by Surrey County Council who
have been busy trying to fill the holes while dealing with the even
more alarming news that 536 drain covers have been stolen from our
roads this year. Although the problem is widespread across the
LIVING WITHIN region, Elmbridge is one of three Surrey boroughs to
have been particularly badly hit.

It costs between £200 and £400 to replace a cover, depending on
the location and the type of cover used. The council estimates it
has spent just over £160,000 on replacements since January – enough
to fill 2,909 potholes.

The police said the covers are being sold for scrap, which
has a high value at the moment. Drain cover gangs are known to
operate all over the UK, many of whom have specialist equipment
which means they can remove the covers in seconds.

If you get approached by anyone trying to sell you a drain
cover, call the police!

Jockey Alan Daly has put on two stone in weight to fulfil his
"burning" desire to become a firefighter.

After 203 wins over 15 years in the saddle,
34-year-old Alan has joined Surrey Fire and Rescue
Service.

Alan, who finished his career with a winner at Lingfield, said:
"I had a fantastic time racing and went out with a bang but I am
ready for a new challenge."

The 5ft 7in jockey said he will enjoy being able to eat more: "I
was fed up of starving myself and sitting in the sauna for two to
three hours a day to lose weight. It is so nice to be able to enjoy
food and eat more than one meal a day."

He recently completed a three-month induction programme at
Esher fire station.

Alan said: "I have still got a lot to learn but I am
completely dedicated and ready for the task."

University of London at the weekend when the College
opened its doors for its annual garden party.

The popular event attracts families and local residents every year
to the prestigious Founder’s Building and supports the Mayor of
Runnymede’s charities which this year are the Junior Diabetes
Research Foundation, Homestart Runnymede, Thorpe Youth Association
and the New Build and Daisy Appeal for the Early Birth Unit at St
Peter’s Hospital. More than £2,000 has been raised and will be
split between the worthy causes and will also include donations to
the Joshua Deller Appeal.

Activities included tours of the campus, live music, children’s
rides, shows, face painting and a raffle. Prizes included
dinner and an overnight stay at Coworth Hotel, dinner for two at
Wentworth Club, a Lumix Digital camera and lunch for two at the
Ritz.

Royal Holloway Events Manager, Marta Baker said, “I’d like to thank
the organisers, sponsors, tour guides and stall holders for another
magnificent community event that brings families, businesses and
staff together to raise money for such worthy causes.”

With a magnificent sunset and aeroplanes flying gracefully low
overhead, Spandau Ballet took to the stage at Sandown Park last
night, delighting the crowd as they strummed out their first hit,
To Cut A Long Story Short.

The middle-aged audience was taken on a reminiscent road trip of
days-gone-by when Spandau shared the airwaves with their Le Bon
& Co rivals from Birmingham.

Spandau's back catalogue is so vast that they would have had to
have played all night to perform all their hits, but most of the
favourites were there, including Only When You Leave, Through
The Barricades, Highly Strung, True and Gold.

Perhaps surprisingly, the band’s best performances of the night
came with their hits Communication, Lifeline and the
excellent Chant No 1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On).

Just as everyone was beginning to feel young again, Tony Hadley
announced that he had just celebrated his 50th birthday. Suddenly
it was 2010 again.

And shortly after that the crowd left the park, satisfied with a
great night out… and their suburban Surrey lifestyle.

Last month Facebook hit a staggering 500,000,000
users, so clearly it’s no longer just tech savvy youths that are
getting comfortable with the idea of sharing details of their
private lives online. The way that we communicate has changed at
breakneck speed over the last few years as a result of new
technology, but is this communication revolution actually making
our lives better?

These days most people use email, texts and the internet on a
daily basis when only a few years ago we were all perfectly happy
with the humble telephone. The vast majority of people I know would
argue that on the whole, technology has made their lives more
efficient. Can anyone remember the last time they wrote an actual
letter, on real writing paper?! It’s not often these days that
we’re asked to write much more than a signature in day to day life,
so when I was asked to fill in a rather long form at the doctors’
surgery recently it made me realise how my dexterity on a keyboard
had come at the expense of my once-legible handwriting. But it’s
not just handwriting that’s suffering in our new ‘always online’
world...

In a very short space of time people have got very comfortable
in sharing their photo’s, thoughts, plans and experiences online
with their closest (and also quite often their most distant)
friends. Much has been written about Facebook’s privacy issues over
the last year or so and the company has recently bowed to pressure
to review its default privacy settings to make it more obvious to
new members exactly what they are agreeing to share with the online
community; seemingly people either didn’t care about the fact that
intimate personal details about their lives were available to all
and sundry, or they just didn’t know what was being shared online.
Either way, it shows a naivety about the internet and the privacy
issues it brings with it which is worryingly commonplace.

What makes this even more concerning is that technology has
brought a new social networking phenomenon that is currently
building momentum and it takes this lack of privacy to new and even
more worrying levels. ‘Geosocial’ devices, which are essentially
internet enabled smartphones with GPS built-in have been around for
a while now, but the software to make use of the technology is now
starting to appear and so are the users. ‘Foursquare’ is an
application designed to be used predominately on smartphones such
as the iPhone and Google’s Android platform that brings together
the existing dominant social networks of Facebook and Twitter and
adds the extra dimension of location to them. So, a
Foursquare user that might Tweet that they are out having a meal
with a friend would also have the location of the restaurant
revealed online. There are certainly positive aspects to this kind
of location tagging such as being able to read about other people’s
experiences and thoughts about a particular place – ‘if you’re
eating here then check out their fabulous BLT sandwich’ – for
example... Broadcasting information about what you are doing is one
thing, but pinpointing your exact location at the same time to
anyone who might like to know strikes me as downright scary -
whether you’re a stalker, a burglar or the local oddball, Geosocial
devices and software are a dream come true!

In June, Webroot, a Denver-based internet security firm,
surveyed 1,645 users of “geo-location-ready mobile devices”,
including 624 in the UK: 29% said they shared their location with
people other than their friends; 31% said they accepted a friend
request from a stranger; and, yet, 55% still said they were worried
about their loss of privacy.

It will certainly be interesting to see how this technology and
the companies that are developing it are policed over the coming
months and years, as our appetite for social media grows and we
become less and less concerned about the personal information we
expose to others online.

Compost

Sometimes gardening seems to be nothing more than a load of
rubbish! Garden rubbish, that is, which you are probably producing
en masse at the moment.

Mower boxes full of lawn clippings, trugs full of weeds, not to
mention all the leaves and dead stems from plants that you didn’t
get round to clearing up over the winter. Even a small garden
produces a surprising amount of rubbish. I spent a couple of days
last week pruning and sorting out a tiny courtyard garden and there
was hardly room for all the bags of rubbish I produced by the end
of it. So what to do with all this green waste? The council
collection service is one option, or you could spend your Saturdays
queuing to get into to the local dump. However, a good way of
dealing with at least some of the material is to start a home
compost heap.

Producing your own compost for the garden isn’t particularly
difficult, it just takes time and patience. Everything will rot
down if you leave it for long enough, the trick is to make it rot
faster so you can get on with using the finished product in your
garden to improve the soil.

You need a space about 1m2 for the ideal compost bin. It can be
in a shady position, so maybe a place where you find it hard to get
anything to grow. You can buy all sorts of different types of bins.
Some look like old fashioned beehives, some are large, plastic
daleks, (designed to EXTERMINATE!), some are simple timber cubes.
Choose something you like to look at, if it is in plain view, or
save money on something simple if it is to be hidden away.

You can also make your own quite easily from some old pallets –
well, I managed to make one and I have no DIY skills whatsoever, so
it can’t be hard!

The key points to consider are that the bin allows drainage,
lets some air in, and retains some warmth. It also needs to keep
out torrential rain, though you do need some moisture, and it helps
to water the heap when the weather is dry.

Making the compost is like making a huge club sandwich. You need
layers, about 60:40 bread layers and juicy filling layers. The
bread layers are woody, brown material like chopped up prunings,
straw and shredded paper. These add carbon to the heap and keep it
aerated. The sandwich filling layers are things like grass
clippings, young weeds and fruit and vegetable peelings. These
provide nitrogen. You will probably find that you produce far more
sandwich filling than bread, so it’s a good idea to buy a bale of
straw to keep near the heap to make a layer when needed. Mix up
layers of grass clippings into some straw too, or they tend to
collapse into a slimy mass.

To speed up the composting process and make better compost, it
helps to turn the heap occasionally. If you have two compost bins,
turn everything from the first bin into the second, when the first
bin is full. If not, take everything out of the bin and put it back
in. It must be said that this is hard work. The alternative is to
just be patient. It can take over a year for the compost to turn
into a brown, crumbly material as good as chocolate cake crumbs. I
can just hear the garden licking its lips at the thought!

Never work with children or animals. That was the message from
Craig Dunkerley, Deputy Chief Explorer of Chessington World of
Adventures Resort. And he should know.

Against a backdrop of a new African-themed reserve, the
Chessington World of Adventures Resort this week played host to the
Destiny Africa Children’s Choir who visited from Kampala Children’s
Centre in Uganda (www.kampalachildren.com). The
children from the choir were asked to name a newly
born Scimitar Horned Oryx.

But when the choir arrived at Chessington, expectant mum
Zola hadn't delivered.

So the nice people at the theme park presented the choir with a
carboard cutout of what the new baby might look like when it
finally enters the world.

The choir had planned to name the calf Mukisa meaning blessing
in Lugandan.

Craig Dunkerley, Deputy Chief Explorer of Chessington World of
Adventures Resort said: "As we all know working with animals almost
never goes to plan so when the Oryx calf didn’t arrive at the
weekend we had an inkling that this could be a little embarrassing.
But the choir seemed to find it more amusing than disappointing,
especially when we presented them with the life-sized cardboard cut
out!"

The African inspired area is called the Wanyama Village
and Reserve and is the latest development at the park. It
features Grevy’s Zebras, the very rare Scimitar Horned Oryx
and other African species and it's part of Chessington Zoo’s vital
breeding programme for endangered species.

Surrey plans to reduce carbon footprint

Surrey’s carbon dioxide emissions will be cut by 20 per cent,
saving an estimated £11,000,000 on energy bills over the next four
years.

If the county council’s recently approved plan is successful, it
will save 21,000 tonnes of carbon. That’s the equivalent of
travelling almost 63 million miles in an average car.

Measures that will be taken to cut the carbon footprint include
improving the energy efficiency of council buildings. Old boilers
will be replaced with more efficient heating systems and properties
will be better insulated. Low carbon technology will be introduced
such as solar water heating and automatic lighting will be fitted
in council buildings.

Already spolit for choice at lunchtime, people who live and work
in Ascot have learnt that another cafe could soon be
opening in the High Street.

An application for change of use at 39 High Street, to
include A3 (restaurant & cafe), has been submitted to
the planning authorities.

In the last 10 years a number of cafes and restaurants have
opened in the town, including Starbucks, Fego and
Subway. They joined a further five outlets who were already
serving "food for consumption on the premises" in Ascot High
Street. A Parish Council meeting on 11 May will be held to
decide if residents have the appetite for another place
to dine.

Get Composting

Surrey residents are being encouraged to help reduce the amount
of waste going to landfill and save themselves money, by producing
free compost for their gardens.

Out of a total 536,000 tonnes of household waste currently
produced in Surrey each year, it's estimated that around a third
could be composted which would save the county an estimated £8.7
million in reduced landfill and green waste disposal costs each
year.

A large part of this saving could be achieved by home
composting. However, findings from a recent waste prevention
survey, carried out in the county, showed that just over half of
all residents who have a garden don't compost at home, potentially
unaware of the benefits home composting can bring to both their
purse and the environment.

To coincide with Compost Awareness Week (2 to 8 May 2010), the
Surrey Waste Partnership, made up of Surrey County Council and the
11 district and borough councils, is running a countywide scheme,
offering home composting bins at reduced prices – from £14.00 (RRP
£39.00), to encourage residents to start composting.

For further
information on composting read Linda Regel's current post for

Esher Church School 2010 10k / Fun Run

Runners from around the country joined locals for this year's
10K race and Fun Run, organised by Esher Church School. With
overcast skies and a top temperature of 11°C it was perfect running
weather, but the pace in the 10K was not as fast as last year.

Patrick Wright won the men's race in a time of 37 minutes 12
seconds. Cat Tuplin was first across the line in the women's race,
recording a time of 45 minutes 50 seconds.

Harry Bathurst was first for the boys in the Fun
Run, with a time of 17 minutes 57 seconds. Claudia
Pattison recorded an excellent time in the girls' race,
crossing the finishing line in 18 minutes 30
seconds.

The annual event has become extremely popular over the last
10 years. The course takes the competitors off road for much of the
distance, weaving them through woods and parks and finally back
uphill to the finish line.

If you noticed a sudden increase in noise from
over the garden fence at the weekend, it’s probably because it
was the end of Noise Action Week marking a return to loud
music, shouting, barking dogs and banging doors. The group behind
the campaign, Noise Concern, points to research showing that half a
million people moved home in 2008 because of noisy neighbours.
So if you saw a lot of For Sale signs going up in Surrey and
Berkshire over the May Day holiday, you’ll know why.
