Winning team: Milbourne Lodge pupils receive their Make IT Happy award at the Houses of Parliament, from Dominic Raab MP.

8 July 2011. Children at a school in Esher were
recognised for their outstanding achievements in using technology
to connect with the community.

The pupils at Milbourne Lodge School took part in Make IT Happy,
e-skills UKs fifth national technology competition for pupils aged
9-11.

This years challenge saw pupils developing projects for the
theme of Pass IT On, demonstrating ways in which they have used
technology to connect with other members in their community.

Pupils from the independent preparatory school chose Tobias and
the Angel as their project, and created materials for the visually
impaired. They shared their finished projects with children from
the Visually Impaired unit at St. Stephens School in Godstone.

Milbourne Lodge pupils won the Regional prize for the South
East, coming third overall in the competition.

Four Milbourne Lodge pupils were invited to represent the
school, along with a student from St. Stephens, at the awards
ceremony.

After taking a spin on the London Eye, the youngsters were lucky
enough to be given a whistle-stop tour of the Houses of Parliament,
by their local MP, Dominic Raab, who took the opportunity to
congratulate them all in person.

LIVING WITHIN reaches milestone

Our first issue from March 2003

1 July 2011 - Readers in Ascot,
Virginia Water and Windlesham began receiving the 100th issue
of their edition of LIVING WITHIN today.

Launched in March 2003 as a bigger, better, brighter read,
LIVING WITHIN has gone from strength to strength all thanks to you
our readers and also to our very loyal advertisers who have made it
possible for us to publish every month for more than eight years
(although we did put out a joint July/August edition in our first
year).

Our very first issue featured some interesting stories including
news about the Ascot Charitable Trust, which was also in its
infancy.

Many other businesses that traded back then have now gone
including Helius, Easydine, Playrooms, Piers Collins Interiors,
Eleven, Zenergy, The Frost Partnership (Virginia Water), Halifax
Estate Agents (Ascot) and Goosebbumps. Back then Ascot High Street
had one coffee shop (and one supermarket). Readers who look back to
that first issue of LIVING WITHIN will see photographs of residents
from Ascot and Virginia Water donning a red nose for Comic
Relief.

We mentioned a woodland development in Broomhall Lane and
carried news on our front cover of an arctic explorer from
Sunninghill named Jim McNeill.

In our property section one commentator interestingly suggested
that “talk of a property crash was wide of the mark.” The first of
our regular property cartoons featured Bin Laden (who had just gone
into hiding following US and UK attacks on Iraq). On our back page
we carried the first of many photographs of Ascot’s Alan Carr
(nobody knew him as a comedian back then). Ascot’s Alan, as you
will no doubt be aware, went on to be awarded an MBE for his
services to charity.

We also covered news from The Carphone Warehouse in Sunningdale
having announced that it was taking its first orders for the 3G
mobile network. The recommended price for a 3G phone was £400 but
there was a six week waiting list.

Guards Polo Club appoints new Chief Executive

Guards Polo Club has announced that it has appointed Neil Hobday
as the Club’s new Chief Executive, with immediate effect.

A former Scots Guards officer, Neil spent four years with the
International Management Group (IMG) in the late 1980s and early
’90s, where he was responsible for managing the personal and
business affairs of some of the world’s top golfers, including
Colin Montgomerie and Sam Torrance. He then co-founded the Carnegie
Sports International company for Sir David Murray creating a
multi-sports marketing and management agency, working with amongst
others Jack Nicklaus’s Golden Bear Group and the Lyle Anderson
Company.

This latter relationship resulted in Neil being appointed Chief
Executive of the exclusive Loch Lomond Golf Club in 1995, a post he
held for four years. Within two years of opening, the Club had
achieved two consecutive world top 50 rankings. More recently Neil
has fulfilled a five-year contract with the Trump Organisation in
Scotland as Consultant Project Director.

Neil said: “I am delighted to be given this opportunity at
Guards Polo Club. I may not be a polo aficionado yet, but my
understanding of the business of sport and club management and my
strong belief in the importance of high operational standards and
good relationships with members and players will ensure that Guards
Polo Club will continue to flourish. In addition I can now publicly
admit to my secret passion for agronomy and so am keen to learn
more about the science of creating the perfect polo ground.”

Following last year’s tragic death of Charlie Stisted, the
Club’s CEO for the past 10 years, the Board appointed Odgers
Berndtson to carry out the selection process on behalf of the Club.
Jock Green-Armytage, Chairman of the Appointments Panel, said:
“Charlie was much admired by players and sponsors alike and the
Board wanted to build on the very solid base which he created.
Therefore the Board took its time and its patience has been
rewarded by Neil accepting the Board’s offer to become the new
Chief Executive at Guards Polo Club. Neil was an impressive
candidate throughout the process and has the right skills to
continue to develop Guards Polo Club’s strengths both at home and
abroad."

Liz completes 12 hour charity Shiatsuthon

Cobham Shiatsu practitioner Liz Kendall recently held her third
annual Shiatsuthon in aid of Help A London Child (HALC), and raised
double the amount from 2010’s event.

For 12 hours on a Saturday Liz gave 20 minute Shiatsu treatments
in exchange for donations to the charity. Shiatsu, meaning “finger
pressure” in Japanese, uses pressure points and gentle stretches to
treat the body and mind. It is helpful for relieving back and neck
pain, stress and promotes the body’s natural healing abilities.
Treatments are given fully clothed, lying on a comfortable floor
mat. Liz had so many Shiatsuthon bookings that the final treatments
were given the following day.

“I was hoping for a busy day but I didn’t expect it to carry
over to Sunday as well!” Liz says. “I gave 24 treatments on
Saturday and another two on Sunday. It was wonderful to have so
much support for the Shiatsuthon. Clients, friends, neighbours and
people I’d never met before all came along to take part. My knees
were a bit red by the end of it but it was a very enjoyable
day.”

Liz was hoping to beat the total from the 2010 Shiatsuthon.

“Last year the Cobham Shiatsuthon raised £290, so I was aiming for
over £300 this year. During the day I was too busy giving
treatments to keep track of how much people were donating, so when
I finally looked at the sponsorship form it was quite a shock. We
raised £580 for Help A London Child. I never thought we would
double last year’s total. Everyone has been spectacularly generous
and the money they gave will be very well spent.”

Top marks as Marist Schools enters Race For Life

Marist girls: Making a positive difference

A team of 166 teachers, pupils, relatives and friends from The
Marist Schools in Sunninghill will be taking part in Cancer
Research UK’s Race for Life event at Windsor Race Course on
Saturday 2 July.

The Marist Race For Life Team have been entering the event since
2006, after deciding to join forces to make a positive difference
to the lives of people affected by cancer in the South East.

Team leader and Head of PE, Jen Bishopp, said: "Race for Life is
a great addition to the school timetable. We’re really looking
forward to taking part and the girls have been training as part of
the running club three times per week. The whole school is
supporting the event so it will be a real team effort and a great
day out for parents, pupils and staff, all whilst raising money for
a seriously good cause.

“The school has a strong history of supporting many worthy
causes and Cancer Research UK is just one of the charities we
support each year. Everyone knows someone who has been touched by
cancer and we all have our special reasons for wanting to take part
and help more people in the South East survive.”

Race for Life 2011 is the UK’s largest women-only fundraising
event series, where women of all ages, shapes sizes and abilities
join together to walk, jog or run 5k to raise money to help beat
cancer.

The Marist Schools team is hoping to raise £3,000. Anyone
wishing to sponsor them should visit http://www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/MaristRaceForLifeTeam2011

Becky Ryczowski, Windsor Race for Life event manager said:
“We’re giving The Marist Schools top marks for their support. By
taking part in Race for Life they’re helping to make a big
difference to cancer patients here on their doorstep.

“We’re issuing a rallying cry to other local schools to follow
their example and sign up for Race for Life now. There are lots of
reasons to get involved – from nurturing team spirit, to getting
involved in the local community to just having fun! Individuals may
also want to take part in memory or celebration of teachers,
classmates or loved ones whose lives have been touched by
cancer.”

She added: “Whatever their motivation, they’ll be doing
something extraordinary - raising money to fund research which
saves lives.”

Super summer fayre held at St Ann's Heath School

Everyone pulled togther to ensure a successful summer fayre

St Ann’s Heath Junior School Summer Fayre attracted large
numbers of pupils and their families, along with local Virginia
Water residents, as supporters of the school enjoyed a fun-packed
afternoon in glorious sunshine.

Highlights of the fayre included demonstrations of skipping,
martial arts and line dancing. Students at the school who had taken
part in a Pop Connections event earlier in the year sang and danced
along to tracks from a CD which they had produced. The events in
the arena also included games organised by Holloway Heroes and
culminated in a tug of war competition.

The school field was a hive of activity, with games, activities,
a bouncy slide, and shopping opportunities accompanied by the smell
of summer: a delicious barbeque. The generosity of
local businesses ensured the raffle and silent auction also
attracted plenty of interest.

The Fayre raised more than £3,853 for the PTA, which is
fundraising for a new tranquil, landscaped garden for the
school.

Headteacher Graham Bollands, who spent the afternoon in the stocks
being good-naturedly pelted with wet sponges, said, “I would like
to thank our PTA who worked extremely hard to organise a very
enjoyable fayre. It was a huge success and everyone who came along
had great fun.”

Year 6 students (left to right) Elana Pagano, Paige Knight and Jessica Stinton. They are with Headmistress Mrs Anne Sweeney.

Following a year of redevelopment work, a new nuersery facility
has been opened at Coworth-Flexlands School providing even
greater indoor and outdoor space to meet the growing local demand
for early years places. In addition to the introduction of flexible
nursery sessions and extended day options, Coworth-Flexlands has
invested in an outdoor classroom and a ‘Woodland Walk‘ for outdoor
learning and exploration. Along with a new dedicated Skylark
Nursery playground - with a tree-house, a fitness trail,
exploration tables and a log cabin - the indoor classrooms have
also been re-developed; creating more space and improved resources
for play and learning across all areas of the curriculum.

"The changes we have made to both our indoor and outdoor space
will allow our very youngest children to play and learn in the best
possible environment," explains Headmistress, Mrs Anne Sweeney.
"Spending time outdoors has such a positive impact on a child’s
sense of well-being supporting all aspects of a child’s
development. With over 13 acres of beautiful grounds we are in
the fortunate position of being able to make this happen."

Coworth-Flexland’s School is an independent preparatory day
school. Located on the outskirts of Chobham Common, the
School is non-selective yet achieves strong and consistent academic
results. This year all Year 6 girls secured places at their
chosen schools with one third winning scholarships and awards to
leading independent secondary schools.

Actress and model Danielle Lineker from Esher recently met up
with six week old Battersea puppies Pluto and Daffy. The Lurcher
puppies are just some of the 140 dogs the charity’s Old Windsor
centre is hoping to find new homes for at its annual Open Day on
Saturday 25 June.

As well as showcasing some of the many dogs in need of a home,
the event will also include open-to-all dog classes including best
Fancy Dress for dogs, Waggiest Tail, Child’s Best Friend and Best
Bull Terrier.

Dog games include the popular Temptation Alley, where dogs have
to run a course without getting distracted by toys and tasty
treats, and Scurry, a timed course featuring small jumps and a
tunnel. And for the more athletic canines in the crowd there will
be a ‘Have a Go Agility’ course, and Water Bobbing.

Kaye Mughal, Centre Manager at Battersea Old Windsor, says: “The
Battersea Open Day is so much fun. We are hoping to find a new home
of as many of our residents as possible, so if you’re thinking
about extending your canine family, please do come along and
support us.”

The Battersea Old Windsor Open Day is free to all and will be
open from 10.30am to 4.30am. The open day will take place at
Battersea Old Windsor, Priest Hill, Berkshire, SL4 2JN. To find out

Prince Harry presents cup to Talandracas at polo final

Facundo Sola, the 19-year-old player who has been the talk of
the Talandracas team, scored the “golden goal” in extra time to
give his team victory in the 2011 Harcourt Developments Queen’s Cup
Final at the Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park. His patron,
Edouard Carmignac, who has twice won the subsidiary trophy – in
2006 and 2007 – received the silver cup from HRH Prince Harry.

The Prince was accompanied into the presentation arena by
Melissa Stisted and Thandi Wooldridge as this day was held in
memory of their husbands, the Guards Polo Club’s esteemed Chief
Executive Charlie Stisted and one of its much respected polo
patrons Ian Wooldridge, who were killed in a helicopter crash last
October.

However, what will stand out for the sell out crowd at Guards
Polo Club was that this high-goal final went to seven chukkas
despite the torrential rain, which marred much of the day. In fact,
all four games, which were played at Guards on this day – the final
and sub final of The Queen’s Cup plus two Al Habtoor Royal Windsor
games – all went into extra time.

Lottery funding buys life saving equipment for Surrey Search & Rescue

A grant from the Big Lottery Fund has helped
Surrey Search & Rescue team fund a mobile command centre.

The grant for £8,657 will be used to buy life saving equipment for
the residents of Surrey. Waterproof clothing, GPS equipment and a
specially fitted trailer with mapping and VHF radio kit will all be
bought with the grant. Surrey Search & Rescue (SurSAR) is a
team of volunteers who undergo specialist training to assist Surrey
Police and the emergency services. The team, formed last year,
primary search for lost and missing vulnerable people in the county
but also assist nationally where possible. They have had eight
incidents this year including the search for missing Sian
O'Callaghan from Swindon.

Tim Rowsell, Chairman, said "This money will dramatically increase
our capability to find missing people. The kit will keep our team
warm and dry when out searching as it's often cold and wet when we
get called out."

Members of the 32-strong team come from all walks of life, from
sales managers and school teachers, to IT workers and from
paramedics to army officers. Very often they are asked to search
for children or elderly people who may have become disorientated
and strayed from their home or hospital, or for vulnerable people
who are likely to harm themselves.

The team have a secret weapon in the form of specially trained
search dogs

“The average person loses 40,000 flakes of skin a minute and 80% of
these are carried on the air. In the wind, the dogs scent this and
follow the trail. Sven Manning, is the group’s canine training
officer. “Our dogs are pets first and go through a rigorous
training assessment programme before becoming operational,” he
explains.

It’s his job to prepare a training plan for the dogs, which are all
at varying levels of searching expertise. Briefly there are levels
of training. Level 1 is for beginners, while Level 2 and Level 3
are fully operational. A Level 3 dog must search an area of around
50 acres of woodland in a 90 minute period. The dogs are taught to
locate a person and then return to their handler. They repeat this,
backwards and forwards, from victim to handler until he or she is
found.

The all team members are expected to attend fortnightly training
sessions.

The team are have recently secured sponsorship from many local
companies, charitable organisations and Surrey County Councillors
but SAR still costs money.

Tim estimates the team shells out around £500 per member on
heavy-duty clothing, VHF radios and other essential equipment.
They’re also finding it increasingly difficult to find large areas
of ground which are available to use for search exercises. The team
is also looking for other sponsors who can supply relevant
services, clothing and other necessary items.

“We do this because we enjoy it and of course, at the end of the
day, when you do help find someone, there is a real feel-good
factor.”

TASIS donates to Harper Asprey

Students at TASIS The American School In England gathered
for a special assembly in June to present Harper Asprey Wildlife
Rescue (HAWR) with £1800. The money was raised at Mayfair, and
students decided to surprise the charity representative, Anne
Brummer, with their donation after she finished giving an
educational talk about British wildlife in the assembly.

Ms. Brummer thanked the Lower School for the donation and said
the money would help many of the animals in her care. This
charity is particularly special to the Lower School, as many
injured birds and other wildlife have been found on the Thorpe
campus and have been reported to HAWR. Subsequently, many of these
rescued animals have been released back into the wild.

After the assembly, excited students were able to interact with
a selection of rescued animals, including: a fox cub, a baby doe,
ducklings, a bat, and hedgehogs.

Ms. Brummer commented, “It is important for children to learn
about the wildlife surrounding them, and to be aware that everyone
can help keep the environment safe for these animals.”

Surrey to press ahead with parking meters

Pay and display meters will become a common feature in towns and
villages across Surrey after county councillors chose to vote
against a 26,000 name petition calling for County Hall to abandon
its proposals for on-street charges at car parking bays.

Retailers have expressed concerns that the introduction of the
parking meters will have an adverse effect on their business
because motorists might now drive directly to out of town retail
parks where parking is free.

Some 22 councillors voted for the petition and 43 voted against
abandoning parking charge plans.

Councillor Ian Lake, Cabinet Minister For Transport, told the
meeting that "strategically placed pay and display schemes do help
businesses."

"Pay and display increases customer turnover by freeing up
parking spaces. This ensures people cannot leave their car parked
in one spot all day," he said.

Councillor Lake acknowledged that shoppers needing a paper
or pint of milk might be deterred from shopping
locally. "We will be recommending that half an hour free
parking be introduced in commercially sensitive areas of towns and
villages," he explained before adding that 30 minutes free
parking will not be introduced throughout the county.

Severe disruption due to forest fires

Monday 9 May 2011 - The majority
of roads which were closed due to the fires in Swinley Forest have
re-opened today (Monday). Forresters Way, however, will remain
closed between Crowthorne Road roundabout and Magdalane Road
roundabout.

The facilities at The Look Out have re-opened - However,
there is currently no public access to Swinley Forest.

The fires broke out last week. Initially there were two areas of
fire, one east of the A3095 Nine Mile Ride and the second west of
the A3095, but this increased to four areas.

The annual Esher Church School 10k race and fun run proved to be
a great bank holiday morning out for everyone. The route was
as well marshalled as ever, and there were lots of
supporters on the streets and pathways around the course
cheering the runners on. The 10K run attracts some great
local runners as well as members of running clubs from around the
southeast of England.

LIVING WITHIN’s Claire Wilson successfully completed the Virgin
London Marathon 2011 and in doing so has raised £1,800 for Shooting
Star CHASE children's hospice.

Claire joined over 35,000 others crossing the finish line in
the glorious sunshine in front of Buckingham Palace. She made
it in 4 hours 45 minutes.

She trained hard in preparation for the marathon, experiencing
the 26.2 mile distance for the first time.

Claire said: "I really enjoyed the first 15 miles but the next
11 miles were more challenging. I’m really pleased to have made it
to the finish line. The support from the crowd on the day was
fantastic. The great British public are so supportive getting
behind everyone. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who
kindly sponsored me. The money raised will make a real
difference to the families that Shooting Star CHASE supports."

Two princesses could be the key to harmony

align="right" src="http://www.livingwithin.com/media/images/twogirls.jpg" />6 April 2011
- Families with two daughters have the most
harmonious family life. That's the finding of a study that said
fights are unlikely if you just have two girls. They will play
nicely and are generally a pleasure to be around.

The results show of all the variations two daughters are
unlikely to wind each other up or ignore each other. The study also
found that two girls make limited noise and often confide in their
parents.

But having four daughters is likely to lead to trouble, with one
in four mums and dads admitting they were not 100% happy with their
lot. One third said they found it hard to cope on a daily basis,
the study of 2,116 parents of children aged 16 and under revealed.
Parents of four girls also admitted to having to cope with an
average of four fights or arguments a day.

Faye Mingo of www.bounty.com says: "The mums and dads we polled
obviously dearly love their children, but those with bigger
families find it much harder to keep the peace on a daily basis. The
findings were absolutely fascinating - we often assume little girls
behave like angels, and if you have two this certainly seems to be
the case. But the more girls you have the more of a handful they
become - more so in fact than boys. In fact, going from two to four
girls seem to take parents from one extreme to the other – whilst
doubling the amount of boys has much less impact. We expected two,
three or four boys to come out as the most difficult combination of
children to have, purely because of their energetic and boisterous
personalities."

The study looked into families with twelve different
combinations of children, excluding only children but including
everything from a brother and sister to four of the same sex. Mums
and dads were asked to rank their children's behaviour within the
family unit based on a string of categories including ease of care,
compatability and overall behaviour.

Two girls scored highly in every category. They were 'easy to
reason' with, 'helped around the house' and generally 'liked each
other'.

But parents of four girls ranked them at the lower end of the
spectrum in most sectors due in no small measure to the sheer
workload managing four youngsters who regularly squabble and know
how to wind each other up. 63% of mums and dads of four girls have
had to buy a bigger house and car. They also find it impossible
dealing with everyone when they’re ill and spend most of the time
encouraging the girls to get on.

In fact, mums and dads with four children of any gender found it
harder, the results showed. And meal times, mornings and the
bedtime routine emerged as key areas which become difficult with
four children. Parents with four children also admitted neglecting
one or more of their children on occasion, and find it harder to
share their attention equally amongst everyone.

'BEST' TO 'WORST' COMBINATIONS OF CHILDREN

1. Two girls

3. Two boys

4. Three girls

5. Three boys

BENEFITS OF HAVING TWO GIRLS

1. Rarely noisy

2. Help around the house

3. Very few fights and arguments

4. Quite easy to reason with

5. Play together nicely

6. Rarely ignore each other

7. They confide in you

8. Very well behaved

9. Rarely try to wind each other up

10. Really like each other

NEGATIVES OF HAVING FOUR GIRLS

1. Fight and argue all the time

2. Difficult to reason with

3. Ignore and dislike each other

4. Bedtime routine is a nightmare

5. Create a lot of noise around the house

6. Rarely confide in you

7. Hard to deal with when ill

8. Takes ages getting ready for school

9. Had to buy a bigger house and car

10. Hard to cope with on a daily basis

The Mayor of Elmbridge Councillor Barry Sheen joined with
over 200 junior lacrosse players at the Elmbridge POP lacrosse
competition. Played by children from State primary and prep
schools up to the age of 11, the event attracted 20 teams from
schools far and wide. Barry Sheen was joined by the local MP
Dominic Rabb to encourage and congratulate these budding players
most of whom had not played a field sport before this
year. The event was hosted by Claremont Fan Court School in
Esher and the winners Coulsdon Primary School narrowly defeated St
Ronan’s primary School in a thrilling final 5-4.

Paul Reynolds, chairman of Cobham Lacrosse Club, explained:
"This was a great day for community sport, many of these guys are
at primary schools and get little chance to play a field sport –
thanks to Surrey Active sports partnership we have been able to
give them an opportunity to play this great game of lacrosse."

Champions: Neil Cordon and Tom Bacon

Claremont Fan Court’s Under 18 tennis team celebrated winning
the Surrey County Lawn Tennis Association Final at St George’s
College. This was the second consecutive year that the Claremont
team had made it to the final, but having lost the previous year to
the Wimbledon Club, the Claremont team was keen to make amends.

Claremont’s team of Neil Cordon and Tom Bacon beat Ham LTA,
Coombe LTA, and played against Spencer LTA in the final. Neil won
his singles emphatically 6-0, 6-0 and Tom followed this with an
impressive win 6-3, 6-1 against his opponent. These two wins put
Claremont into an unassailable lead. The doubles was another good
match with Claremont winning 6-1, 6-1 thus taking the final 3
rubbers to none.

This competition, first played in 1949 and open to club and
school teams, is an annual event. The cup is now proudly displayed
at Claremont Fan Court School – the first county tennis cup
Claremont has won.

Well done to both boys for their very impressive play.

Marist runners: Worked fantastically as a team

Girls from the Marist Senior School, Ascot, have defended their
title as Bracknell Schools Relay Champions for the second year. The
relay team included two girls from years 7 to 9 and the team
members were: Emma Davis, Ffion Mackenzie, Will ten Cate, Amy
Tickner, Chelsea Tinniswood and Greta Spitzer

From the outset they were placed in firm second place and as the
team progressed through their individual laps of the course they
moved swiftly into first place after their third athlete set off.

Mrs Jen Bishopp, Head of PE at The Marist, said: “We are
delighted to have won the title again against such stiff
competition and this performance demonstrates once again the high
calibre of sporting prowess which we have at The Marist. The
girls work fantastically as a team to achieve such a fabulous
result and we look forward to defending our title again next
year.”

The event is organised by Julian Goater, Ex England and GB cross
country athlete and is in its seventh year.

TASIS students unite in support of the Japan earthquake and tsunami victims

Taking action: Michiharu Ono, Katzutaka Suzuki, Hazuki Yamagata, Chloë Turgeon and Saori Abe

Upper school students at TASIS The American School in England
have shown true camaraderie by taking immediate action to support
their Japanese classmates after the devastating effects of the
earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

DEAG (Disaster Emergency Action Group) is a community service
group run by Student Activities Coordinator, Mrs Reinikainen, and
is comprised of upper school students who raise money for charity
throughout the year.

As soon as the news hit headlines on 11 March, DEAG called an
emergency meeting to create a plan of action. Students decided to
raise money and awareness throughout the TASIS community with a
plan that includes: money collection boxes, lapel solidarity
stickers of the Japanese flag, coin jar races, and fundraising
sales of cupcakes, red and white bracelets, and specialist Japanese
food – including sushi, noodles and candies.

Headmaster, Mr McBrien, along with DEAG, decided to dedicate the
week from 1 to 7 April as Japan Week at TASIS to encourage more
support for this worthy cause.

Mrs Reinikainen said: “As soon as the news of the earthquake broke,
students from many different countries came to ask me how they
could help with fundraising for the victims in Japan, and how they
could support fellow Japanese students in our school. I feel very
proud of the strong sense of community we have at TASIS.”

Author spends day at Coworth-Flexlands

Antony Lishak with children at Coworth-Flexlands School near Windlesham

Popular children’s author, Antony Lishak recently visited
Coworth-Flexlands school.

Students were thrilled to meet him when he spent a day at the
school sharing his love of literature and running a series of
creative writing workshops for the older children. The children
loved his infectious approach to teaching and his passion for
literature - both of which made for some highly interactive and
effective sessions.

Antony was a primary school teacher for 15 years before starting
his writing career. He has written many fiction and non-fiction
books for primary school children and now combines his passion for
teaching and writing through school visits.

His visit to Coworth-Flexlands School launched the school’s
regular Book Week. Activities included writing workshops, book
readings and a book sale. The younger children in the school also
took the opportunity to dress up as some of their favourite book
characters for a special end of week ‘Book Assembly’.

“A love of books is something we help all our children develop
during their time at Coworth-Flexlands School,” said Mrs Kafena,
Head of English at Coworth Flexlands, which is based just outside
of Windlesham. “Mr Lishak’s visit has added an extra impetus to
this.”

Students from Cheapside, Holy Trinity and St Michael’s took part in the concert at the Hexagon.

The Hexagon theatre in Reading was recently packed with over 350
primary and junior school children from schools in the Ascot and
Maidenhead area who were there to perform a concert entitled Watch
this Space.

The concert, organised and coordinated by Clive Waterman and
supported by the Rotary Clubs of Ascot and Wokingham, investigated
both our world, and the possibility of others. It looked at the
planets in our solar system and in a light-hearted way considered
the life forms that just might dwell there! All were placed in the
spotlight through drama, dance and song.

Rehearsals and practice sessions have been taking place in all
the participating schools through this school year, with mass
rehearsals at Courthouse school in November, January and early
March. The live concert took place with an audience of over
1,000 packing the auditorium.

In view of the disaster which struck Japan, the Rotary Clubs
decided to organise a retiring collection to provide aid to the
Japanese children most affected by the earthquake and tsunami. This
raised the magnificent sum of £1,200.

Adam Afriyie MP visits Hurst Lodge

School visit: Adam Afriyie

Ever wondered what it is like to work in the Houses of
Parliament? Lucky students from Hurst Lodge in Ascot were fortunate
enough to ge given an insight when local MP Adam Afriyie recently
visited the school.

Mr Afriyie spent 40 minutes answering questions about a variety
of topics from “Do you like being an MP?” to “Do David Cameron and
Nick Clegg actually like one another?” and “How involved do you get
in international politics particularly when British citizens are
stranded abroad?”

He then toured the school accompanied by Sofia Quick, a sixth
former who is the school’s Head of Council. Sofia has developed an
interest in politics after putting the case for the Conservatives
at the school’s political hustings during the election week.

Sofia was responsible for organising the visit and liaising with Mr
Afriyie’s personal secretary. School Principal Victoria Smit said:
“We were very grateful to Mr Afriyie for giving up his time. He has
the gift of talking to young people in a manner that they easily
understand and even the youngest children felt happy to ask
questions.”

Girls from The Marist Senior School in King’s Road, Sunninghill,
recently took second place in the medley relay, and third place in
the Freestyle at the English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA)
championship.

The Marist Intermediate Swimming Team travelled to Stockport to
take part in the English Schools’ National Team Relay Championships
for Secondary Schools. Year 10 students Lucy Campbell, Flo
Claringbold and Jesie Dyos swam with Annabel Humphries from Year
11.

PE teacher Karen Thompson said: “The girls have trained very
hard indeed this season and I’m very proud of them all. I’m looking
forward to seeing them continue to grow in their sport and continue
to do well in the championships in the future.”

ESSA promotes the teaching of swimming in schools as well as
organising swimming competitions.
