Australian billionaire James Packer enjoyed a slight victory at the
Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park, with his Ellerston team beating
Sumaya 10-9 in the Vivari Queen’s Cup final. It was a great comeback for
his side, which was narrowly defeated in last year’s final by Italian side
Loro Piana. Polo fans will remember that James – the son of the late media
mogul Kerry Packer – was forced to abandon his team to attend his wedding.
This year, after coming back from being four goals behind to just a
one-goal deficit by half time, Packer’s team notched up a record sixth win
in the competition. Ellerston went one goal ahead during the fourth
chukka. Despite an impressive goal by Sumaya’s Milo Fernandez Arajuo,
Packer’s team managed to hold on to their lead. It’s been nine years since
Ellerston has enjoyed victory at the prestigious high-goal tournament,
which it so dominated throughout the 1990s. After this year’s tournament,
Her Majesty The Queen – who was wearing a summery pink outfit – presented
the Vivari Queen’s Cup trophy to Ellerston. She was joined at the event by
grandchildren Princess Beatrice and younger sister Princess Eugenie.
American boyfriend, Dave Clark accompanied Princess Beatrice. The event
also attracts famous names from the world of sport and entertainment and
this year included DJ Chris Evans and his wife Natasha
Shishmanian.
